Briesach

To get to the St. Stephen's Cathedral in Breisach, we had to park beneath the city walls and hike up to it.

We followed the gradually winding road upward, and at various points along the cathedral popped into view above us.

The cathedral sits at the top of a lone hill in the center of the city, looking over the surrounding countryside. It was completed in the late 1400s, built simple and sturdy, like a fortress.

Murals by Martin Schongauer cover the walls, and show signs of damage from World War II. Around the altar in the front of the cathedral are carvings including a triptych, added later, in a more ornate style that developed after the building itself was finished.
