Freiberg

We continued our drive through the Black Forest and came to Freiburg.

As we left our car and entered the old section of town, we began to enjoy the unique character of the city. No cars are allowed in the downtown area, so we could walk unhurried through winding streets.

Along the sidewalks flows clean water in gutters, and children floated homemade boats in the slow currents. On a street corner a small ensemble dressed in traditional German outfits played local folk music. The sidewalks were paved with distinctive cobblestones, and since medieval times each shop advertised using a mosaic in the sidewalk. Based on this mosaic, can you guess what the shop sold?

We followed the streets to a large plaza, where the Freiburg Cathedral waited. Germany's largest gothic building, the cathedral boasts fantastic gargoyles and flying buttresses carved from red sandstone.

Inside, the interior glowed with candlelight, and organ music filled the cathedral.
